Studied at Gala School, Galashiels. Privately. Edited bluntly Express (his father’s paper) for several years up to 1869, when left north to edit the Sheffield Evening Star (now Yorkshire Telegraph and Star), which he combined with the editorship of the Sheffield Times.
Joined the staff of Sheffield Daily Telegraph as Chief of Reporting Staff and occasional leader and descriptive writer, 1875. Assistant Editor and Acting Editor. Editor of Sheffield Daily Telegraph, 1902-1906.
Original Member Institute of Journalists (Fellow, 1898),and of Original Society the National Association of Journalists. Member of the Sheffield Chamber of Commerce. Editor of Derbyshire Printing Company’s papers since 1910.
