Sailed for American in service of Associate Reformed C. of North American in Ohio Valley, fall 1802. Professor philosophy Transylvania University, 1804124. President Miami University, Oxford, O., 1824-1841, held an experimental professorship of history and philosophy of social relations (one of earliest modern courses in sociology), 1833, resigned, 1841.
Continued courses in social philosophy at an academic (became Farmers’ College 1846, now Ohio Military Institute), Pleasant Hill, O. 1845-1855.
Began to establish Sunday schools for Negroes, 1815. Joined Presbyterian Church, 1819, attempted to prevent its division, organized group of ministers who advocated continued union of the church, 1838, assisted in publishing Western Peace-Maker and Monthly Religious Journal (magazine of the group), 1839-1840.
