Annual Commissioned Second lieutenant, infantry, United States Army, 1918, and advanced through grades to major general, 1950. Served with 31st Infantry, American Expeditionary Force, Siberia and Philippine Islands, 1918-1922. Chinese language student and attache American Legation, Peking, China, 1929-1933.
With War Department General Staff, March 1941-December 1942.
Commanding officer 11th Airborne Division, 188th Paratroop Glider Infantry, 1943-1945. Became assistant division commander 38th Infantry Division, March 1945, also assistant division commander, 11th Airborne Division, Sendai, Japan, 1945-1946, military attache Nanking, China, 1946-1950.
Later commanding general 3d Infantry Division, of Korea, and then inspector infantry, Army Field Forces, Fort Monroe, Virginia.
