Entered the United States Naval Academy as cadet midshipman at age of 17. After graduation transferred to army. Served on Indian frontier and in California, until October 1886, when he was retired for disabilities contracted in line of duty.
Was First lieutenant and brevetted captain for services in Nez Perces Indian war.
