Ordained minister Presbyterian Church, 1846. Teacher Union Theological Seminary, Richmond, Virginia, also preacher chapel, occasionally teacher at Hampden-Sydney College, 1853-1883. Became professor Princeton, also minister Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church, New York City, 1860.
Opposed secession before Civil War, but supported South with religious fervor when war began.
Served as chaplain Confederate Army, 1862, commissioned major Thomas J. (Stonewall) Jackson’s staff Proposed saving “spiritual” South by mass migrations from conquered “geographical” South to Australia or Brazil.
Became professor philosophy University Texas, 1883, a founder Austin School of Theology. Infirm and totally blind, 1890 until death, but continued to lecture until 1897.
