(Recent controversy over religion in public education has ...)
Recent controversy over religion in public education has sharpened interest in the intent of the founding fathers regarding this sensitive subject. Jefferson particularly concerned himself with the problem, and in this first book dealing with Jefferson's thought on the question, Mr. Healey shows how the principle of the separation of church and state grew out of the statesman's total thinking on religion, government, and education. True religion was basic to his educational objective of the moral, resourceful, independent individual, but he sought to prevent the entrance into public education of sectarian doctrine, which he considered demoralizing. Instead, he fostered a "general religion" of his own. This book will be of value to teachers, administrators, clergymen, jurists, historians, and all laymen interested in problems of American education. -- from book's dustjacket
