Henderson, Robert Miller was born on March 12, 1827 in N. Middletown Township, Pennsylvania, United States. Son of William Miller and Elizabeth (Parker) Henderson.


Educational public schools, Carlisle, Pennsylvania, Dickinson College, Bachelor of Arts, 1845 (A.M., Doctor of Laws).


Admitted to bar, August 25, 1847. Member Pennsylvania legislature, 1851-1853. Captain Pennsylvania Reserves (7th Pennsylvania), 1861, 36th Pennsylvania Vol.

Infantry, attached to 2d brigade McCall’s Division, Army of Potomac. Judge-advocate of div., 1861-June 1862. Wounded at Charles City Cross Roads, June 30, 1862.

Promoted (on recommendation of Brig. General Seymour) for “brilliant gallantry” lieutenant colonel, July 4, 1862. Severely wounded. August 30, 1862, at 2d Bull Run.

Appointed inspector general of div., June 2, 1863. Provost-marshal, 15th Pennsylvania district, April 18, 1863. Honorary discharge, November 10, 1865.

Bvtd. colonel and brigadier general United States.V., for gallantry, March 13, 1865. Appointed April 1874, and elected November 1874, additional law judge, 12th judicial district, Pennsylvania, and in January, 1882, became president judge of district. Subsequently resigned and resumed practice.
