(This volume investigates the objectives, activities and a...)
This volume investigates the objectives, activities and a decade of success and failure by Islamist military officers and civilians to create the first Islamic government in Africa after the coup d'etat by Brigadier Omar Hasan Ahmad al-Bashir. It describes and analyses the role played by Hasan al-Turabi in the Sudan, the world and the revolutionary government from its relative isolation on the frontiers of Islam and the margins of the Arab world. It follows the activities of this ideological and activist leader of the revolution who used his influence as a charismatic Muslim scholar to precipitate an Islamic revolution until his downfall and expulsion from government in 2000 by those who he had hoped to mould to his Islamist ideologies.

(Giving to charity is incumbent upon every Muslim. Through...)
Giving to charity is incumbent upon every Muslim. Throughout history, Muslims have donated to the poor and to charitable endowments set up for the purposes of promoting Islam through the construction of mosques, schools, and hospitals. In recent years, there has been a dramatic proliferation of Islamic charities, many of which were created in the declining decades of the 20th century by the infusion of oil money into the Muslim world. While most of these are legitimate, there is now considerable and worrying evidence to show that others have more questionable intentions, and that funds from such organizations have been diverted to support terrorist groups, such as al-Qaeda. The authors of this book examine the contention through a detailed investigation of the charities involved, their financial intermediaries, and the terrorist organizations themselves. What they discover is that money from these charities has funded conflicts across the world, from the early days in Afghanistan when the mujahideen (Muslim Warriors) fought the Soviets, to subsequent terrorist activities in Central Asia, Southeast Asia, Africa, Palestine, and, most recently, in Europe and the United States. This ground-breaking book is the first to piece together, from a vast array of sources, the secret and complex financial systems that support terror.

(In a trawl through the entire sweep of sub-Saharan histor...)
In a trawl through the entire sweep of sub-Saharan history, the authors have written an accessible introduction for students and general readers. The opening chapter on geography and climate frames the discussion, demonstrating how the environment has shaped the societies and cultures of those living in the region. Thereafter they describe the rise of states and empires in the classical period, the slave trade within Africa and beyond to the Americas, and the European conquest. The concluding section focuses on Africa in the twentieth century as it gains independence and searches for a new identity beyond colonialism. While the authors mull over the debates which have shaped the study of African history, at the center of this story are the tragedies, triumphs and the resilience of the African people. The book is illustrated with photographs, maps, and sidebars which feature the salient points on either side of the debates.

(Civil Wars and Revolution in the Sudan is a collection of...)
Civil Wars and Revolution in the Sudan is a collection of twenty essays written over forty years between 1962 and 2004 on the Sudan, southern Sudan and Darfur. Throughout these four decades civil war has raged in the southern Sudan that has cost more than two million dead and another six million refugees and Internally Displaced Persons. No one can imagine the amount of human suffering this conflict has produced. Now, after a decade of ambivalent and frustrating negotiations, a peace agreement between the Sudan People's Liberation Movement and the Government of the Sudan has finally been signed on 9 January 2005 leaving in its wake a devastated southern Sudan-- its infrastructure completely destroyed, its fragile economy in ruins, and its people exhausted after nearly half a century of fierce fighting. Although these twenty essays include such topics as nation-building, the dynamics of racial, ethnic, cultural, and religious identity, the politics of oil, and the legacy of slavery, most of them are concerned with conflict in the Sudan, its participants, and the reasons why and it began and has continued for so long. Since these essays were written and are presented here in chronological order, the aggregate becomes a unique history of the Sudan's terrible civil war that cannot be found elsewhere. Moreover, each essay is self-contained, but the recurrent themes that have dominated the independent Sudan are woven into the text of each revealing new insights into the history of these tumultuous decades. This impressive collection has made an unsurpassed contribution to Sudan studies that go far beyond the author's interests as an historian by the sheer diversity and breadth of his subjects, both past and present. In all the essays, however, the reader will discover his deep commitment to find a common identity in which all Sudanese, despite their immense diversity, can find a sense of being and dignity as equal Sudanese. The perception by the dominant Arab-Islamist establishment in the north insists that the national identity is Arab by descent, Arabic-speaking, and culturally Arabized when their visible, ethnic, and cultural characteristics clearly demonstrate an Afro-Arab character. Nevertheless, their efforts to impose their self-perception on all Sudanese has led to the discrimination and marginalization of all those, Muslim and non-Muslim, who do not fit their Arab-Islamic mould. This very difficult problem of identity, "who are the Sudanese," appears repeatedly in these essays to be treated with great sensitivity and compassion by the author. Although he remains unforgiving about the harsh geographical realities of the Sudan and consistently demonstrates his dismay at the quality of leadership in the various independent governments, he is steadfast in his generous and affectionate treatment of the Sudanese and his unswerving devotion to them.

( After a decade of uneasy peace, the historic conflict b...)
After a decade of uneasy peace, the historic conflict between the Northern Sudanese, who identify with their Middle Eastern neighbors, and the Southern Sudanese, who are of African heritage, erupted into violent conflict in 1983. This ferocious civil war, with its Arab militias and widespread use of automatic weapons, has devastated the populace. Nature has added to the miseries of war, bringing drought and famine to the already battered victims of violence. Although this regional calamity remains largely unknown to the outside world, the death toll among the Southern Sudanese far exceeds that in both Somalia or Bosnia. Over a million people have either perished or been displaced. This chilling account of the ravages of drought and civil war is based on a wealth of documents—never made public—from Sudanese government sources, private and foreign governmental aid agencies, research groups, international media, and other organizations involved in famine relief efforts. The authors graphically recount how the attempts of the international agencies and humanitarian organzations to provide food and medical relief have been thwarted by bureaucratic infighting, corruption, greed, and ineptitude. This rich narrative illustrates with great clarity the convoluted relationship that relief agencies had with the Sudanese government as they tried to negotiate the means of survival for the area’s desperate population. It is a sad tale of the tragic human consequences of the failure of conflict resolution, of organizational mismanagement, and of a government hostile toward its own people.

(The second edition of A History of Sub-Saharan Africa con...)
The second edition of A History of Sub-Saharan Africa continues to provide an accessible introduction to the continent's history for students and general readers. The authors employ a thematic approach to their subject, focusing on how the environment has shaped the societies and cultures of the African peoples. The text demonstrates how the geography, climate, and geology of Africa influenced the rise of states and empires, the emergence of the trans-Atlantic slave trade, the European conquest, and the creation of independent African nations. Yet the book maintains a focus on the peoples whose creative energies built unique communities and traditions within the challenging context of the Africa landmass. In the process of reconstructing this continent's rich history, the authors analyze the contentious scholarly debates that have emerged out of this field. The book is illustrated with photographs, maps, and sidebars that feature the salient points on either side of the debates.

(Sudan's modern history has been consumed by revolution an...)
Sudan's modern history has been consumed by revolution and civil war. The country attracted international attention in the 1990s as a breeding ground of Islamist terrorism and recently tensions between the prosperous centre and the periphery, between north and south, have exploded in Darfur. In his latest book, Robert Collins, a frequent visitor and veteran scholar of the region, traces Sudan's history across two hundred years to show how many of the tragedies of today have been planted in its past. The story begins with the conquest of Muhammad 'Ali in 1821, and moves through the Anglo-Egyptian condominium to independence in 1956. It then focuses on Sudanese rule in the post-independence years when the fragile democracy established by the British collapsed under sectarian strife. It is these religious and ethnic divides, the author contends, in conjunction with failed leadership, which have prolonged and sustained the conflict in Sudan.

(The Heart of Darkness, this is the image that most in the...)
The Heart of Darkness, this is the image that most in the West hold of pre-colonial Africa. Joseph Conrad's description of a continent lacking in civilization, commerce, and Christianity is familiar to many readers. Historians have been working to dispel this notion before since the institution of African independence after World War II. Collins seeks to familiarize the reader with pre-colonial Africa, the Africa that began with the migrations of the Bantu from their homeland in 500 B.C. and ended with European control in the 19th century, revealing the culture, events, achievement and rulers of Africa from this time.
