Graduated from the University South. Military Academy, 1824.
Assistant professor natural and experimental philosophy United States Military Academy, 1824-1829. Commissioned First lieutenant, 1831. Promoted captain of ordnance, 1836, went to Washington (District of Columbia) as assistant to bureau of ordnance.
Resigned from army to become superintendent West Point Foundry, Cold Spring, New York, 1836, became lessee of foundry, 1839, directed business until 1877.
Bought 7,000 acre tract of land, built Greenwood Iron Furnace (ran with his brother), 1839-1877. Patented design for strengthening cast-iron cannon with a wrought-iron hoop shrunken on the breech, also an improved expanding projectile for rifled ordnance, 1861.
Received large orders for guns and projectiles in Civil War. Began (with brother) 1st commercial production of slag wool in the United States, 1875.
1st judge Court of Common Pleas for Putnam County, New York, 1844-1847.
Married Mary Kemble, 1839, 1 adopted son.
