( Many thousands of Americans in such cities as Miami, Ne...)
Many thousands of Americans in such cities as Miami, New Orleans, Galveston, and Corpus Christi live near an estuary, one of nature’s most intriguing ecosystems. But the same citizens who depend on a neighboring estuary for fresh shrimp or who visit it on a Sunday outing often know little about the physical makeup of estuaries and their contributions to the quality of human life. In this comprehensive study, Robert Stickney examines the physical, chemical, geological, and biological characteristics of estuaries, coastal regions where fresh water and seawater intermingle. This book, the first to bring together data on estuarine ecology in the region of interest, will provide a benchmark for future studies of estuaries and their mysteries and will be invaluable to aquatic ecologists, nonbiological oceanographers and limnologists, and interested laymen. Its storehouse of technical information will assure it a continuing place in the literature of estuarine ecology.

Provides the basic concepts and techniques required to rear warmwater animals in both fresh and marine environments and under controlled or semi-controlled conditions. Utilizes examples from various species to demonstrate how specific general principles can be applied throughout the field. Focuses on commercially important species that are being or can be reared in the United States. The concepts can also be applied to animals reared for laboratory use. Includes a comprehensive bibliography to the literature.

Based on the author's previous work, Principles of Warmwater Aquaculture, this text updates and expands upon the basic principles of aquaculture. Encompasses a wider diversity of aquatic animals including coldwater fishes. Focuses on the practical aspects of water quality, feeding and nutrition, reproduction, breeding, diseases and operations. Deals with the environmental, social and economic aspects of aquaculture. Many of the examples feature species of both sport and commercial interest.

(Providing a broad and readable overview of the subject, t...)
Providing a broad and readable overview of the subject, this updated second edition of Aquaculture: An Introductory Text covers issues associated with sustainable aquaculture development, culture systems, hatchery methods, nutrition and feeding of aquaculture species, reproductive strategies, harvesting, and many other topics. While its main focus is on the culture of fish, molluscs, and crustaceans for food, the book also covers other forms of aquaculture, such as the production of seaweeds, recreational fish and ornamental species, and live foods such as algae and rotifers that are used to feed larval shrimp and marine fish. Printed in a new, larger format and illustrated with many photos and diagrams, this will be an essential resource for undergraduate students of aquaculture and related topics. The scope is global and much of the information is based on first-hand experiences of the author.

"Culture of Salmonid Fishes" presents a comprehensive discussion of the culture of the family Salmonidae, one of the most interesting and widely studied groups of fishes. Trout and salmon culture are extremely important around the world in commercial fisheries, recreational fisheries, and in recent years, commercial aquaculture. This book examines the biology and culture of Atlantic salmon, Pacific salmon, and rainbow trout. It is aimed at aquaculturists.

Focuses on: Minimal net utilization of natural resources Production of healthy products for food Appropriate regulations and policies Environmental impact and pollution from aquaculture Case studies from various geographical settings, including North and Latin America, Asia and the Pacific With the expansion of the world aquaculture industry, there has been increasing concern over sustainability and environmental impact. This book addresses this topical issue, concentrating on marine aquaculture. Chapters have been developed from a meeting of the World Aquaculture Society in January 2001, and additional contributions have also been commissioned.
