Director University of Pennsylvania Museum, 1892-1899. Curator ethnology, Brooklyn Institute Museum, since 1903. Made numerous scientific expeditions to Japan, of Korea, China and India, and among American Indian tribes.

Knight of Royal Order of Isabella the Catholic.
