Roberto was born on 9 September 1963 in Cisano Bergamasco, Italy.
Roberto started his playing career in Atalanta in 1982, yet his most famous and victorious time was with Milan that he joined in 1986. His role in the Rossoneri was exceptional as the talented midfielder helped the side to claim five Serie A titles, three European Cups, two Intercontitental Cups and three European Super Cups. During that glorious spell in Milan Donadoni was regularly selected to the national team of Italy, competing in the 1990 and 1994 World Cups.
The 1996 transfer to the MetroStars team brought the player to the American MLS where he stayed for a season, scoring six goals. Al-Ittihad from Saudi Arabia was the club where he ended his playing career.
Donadoni stepped on managerial path in 2001 as he started training the Italian club Lecco, later moving to Livorno and Genoa. The unexpected promotion to the post of Italy head coach happened in 2006, Donadoni replacing Marcello Lippi who led the team to the victory at the 2006 World Cup. The new coach secured qualification for Euro 2008, although at the tournament Italy showed disappointing results and reached only the quarter-finals, where it was defeated by Spain on penalties. After the European championship the tactician was dismissed from his position.
After short periods in Napoli and Cagliari, Donadoni was appointed as a manager of Parma on 9 January 2012, subsequently leading the side to the 8th place in the table and setting the record of 7 victories in a row.
In October 2015, Donadoni was hired by newly promoted Serie A club Bologna as the club's new coach, replacing Delio Rossi. Donadoni parted with Bologna on 24 May 2018.
Roberto Donadoni is well-known as an AC Milan legend. At international level, Donadoni was an important member of the Italy national team throughout the late 1980s and early '90s. He represented his country at the 1988 and 1996 European Championships, and at the 1990 and 1994 FIFA World Cups. With Italy, he reached the semi-finals of Euro 1988, and won bronze and silver medals at the 1990 and 1994 World Cups respectively.
