During World World War II, he served in British naval intelligence. He wrote the 1967 book Ace of Spies about the super-spy Sidney Reilly, which was made into a 1983 television miniseries Reilly: Ace of Spies, starring Sam Neill as the title character and Ian Charleson as his father. The book was republished in 1984 as Reilly: Ace of Spies.
