Robison Wells was born on April 4, 1978, in Utah, United States.
Wells graduated from the University of Utah in 2003 with a degree in political science, emphasizing in international relations, with a minor in history, and earned a Master of Business Administration degree in marketing from Brigham Young University in 2009.
Robison Wells first began writing as part of a writing group with Dan Wells and Brandon Sanderson. Wells's first three books were written for the LDS fiction market. The first, On Second Thought, is a romantic comedy set in New Mexico, and the second two, Wake Me When It's Over and The Counterfeit are political thrillers.
In April 2010 it was announced that Wells had signed a 3-book YA deal with HarperTeen. The first novel Variant is a young adult science fiction novel set in a boarding school in New Mexico. It has one sequel, Feedback.
It is not a trilogy. Wells's third book with HarperTeen, Blackout has been announced in Publisher's Marketplace as being the first of a series, including two novels and a novella, and will be released in Fall 2013. Wells is also contracted with HarperTeen for an additional book after that series. Variant was released to much critical acclaim, receiving starred reviews from Publishers Weekly and VOYA. It also received favorable reviews from Booklist and Kirkus.
Publishers Weekly also named Variant as one of their Best Books of 2011, and featured Wells as one of their "Flying Starts". Feedback has received mixed reviews. Kirkus referred to it as "An absorbing read that won't let fans of the first down", while Booklist said, "the claustrophobic tightness of the first book is replaced here by a loose series of threats that never solidify into something worth rooting against."
In 2014, Wells, joined by Brandon Sanderson and Dan Wells, edited, Altered Perceptions, an anthology of essays from popular YA writers about their struggles with mental illness.
Well's major achievement is in his books that have been published in nine different languages in more than two dozen countries. He is the winner of many awards both in and out of the United States. He is the author of popular novels, Blackout, Variant, and Feedback. Variant was a Publishers Weekly Best Book and a YALSA Quick Pick for Reluctant Readers.
Also, Wells is a founder of the Whitney Awards, an awards program for LDS fiction that he established in 2007. Robison Wells also served as president of the Whitney Awards Committee for three years, ending in 2010.

2014Wells grew up in the religious family with parents that were very active in the Church, and so, as he stated once, he was very active in the Church as well, and never really considered anything else. He even graduated from seminary and prepared to go on a mission, however, faced some spiritual challenges that he couldn't overcome. As of today, Wells is a practicing member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Here is what Wells stated about his personal views regarding his writing: "I don’t set out to make a statement about the gospel. I don’t want to tell a story about conversion or faith. Instead, I’m telling a story about terrorism or nuclear proliferation or whatever, and I let my characters react. In my second and third books, the main characters are active LDS (Latter-day Saints), so they react in a certain way: they pray, they talk about their faith, one gives the other a blessing. But none of this was done to present a moral. It was just done because that’s how the characters would have reacted."
Quotations:
"An absorbing read that won't let fans of the first down".
"Most of my regrets are with how I treated my writing. Early on, I had a very laid-back approach to the books that I think hurt me a little bit. I should have polished them more and spent more time honing my craft. With my first and second books, I really loathed rewriting and would avoid it whenever possible. I wish I could go back and give them both a thorough cleanup."
"Back when I had that first idea for a book, my brother gave me some advice that changed my life. He said “Everyone says they have an idea for a book. Everyone says that one day they’re going to sit down and write the great American novel. The difference between authors and everyone else is that authors actually do it.” That would be my advice for aspiring writers: write. Even now, having written seven novels and published three, I am amazed by how beneficial it is when I force myself to write when I don’t want to. Every one of my books contains passages that were free writes - forcing myself to push through writers' block without knowing where I was going - and it turned out so well that it stayed in the book."
"Orson Scott Card once said that your first million words are crap. While I don’t know if I entirely agree - I’ve probably only crossed the million-word mark in the last few years - it’s definitely true that the more you write the better you get. The key is to keep at it, to fight through a couple lousy, unpublishable books and not let that discourage you."
"Because I came to writing late, and was never an avid reader before I became a writer, I think I never came to define myself as a reader. I never had that oft-talked-about experience of walking to the library as a kid and discovering new worlds. Consequently, I don’t really think about that when I write."
"I write because I love it. That’s not to say that I don’t enjoy hearing feedback from readers, because I definitely do. But I write because it’s fun."
Wells suffers from a severe panic disorder, agoraphobia, depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and trichotillomania. Because of these reasons, he is an outspoken advocate for those with mental illness.
Wells lives in North Ogden, Utah, with his wife Erin and three children. He previously lived in New Mexico, which has been the setting for four of his novels.
