Educated at schools in Luwerezi and Embangweni, then at Dedza Secondary School. After two years at Domasi Teachers’ Training College he qualified in 1958.
He taught for four years at Livingstonia Secondary School and then was promoted district schools inspector for Karonga and Chitipa. After a course in Britain in 1963 he was appointed district education officer for Blantyre City Schools in 1964. From 1968 to 1970 he served at the Malawi High Commission in London as education attache looking after Malawi students in Britain and supervising the education programmes. On his return he became district education officer for Lilongwe and six months later was promoted assistant regional education officer in the Central Region. He entered Parliament in April 1971.
