Rochelle Alers was born on August 7, 1943 in Manhattan, New York, where she was also raised. She is the daughter of James A. and Minnie L. Ford.
In 1974 Rochelle graduated from John Jay College of Criminal Justice of the City University of New York and received a B.A. She also earned degrees in sociology and psychology.
Rochelle taught pre-school for a time before entering the business world. Alers began writing her first novel in 1984, after a decade of reading romance novels. She finished her first manuscript, the novel Hideway, in 1985. After several rejections because her work did not fit the formula of a category romance novel, Alers perfected her style and was first published by Doubleday Books in 1988.
She writes full-time currently after retiring from her job as a Community Liaison Specialist for a state funded abuse program in Long Island. Rochelle Alers lives in a charming hamlet on Long Island.
Alers has been hailed by readers and booksellers alike as one of today's most prolific and popular African-American authors of romance and women's fiction. With more than fifty titles and nearly two million copies of her novels in print, she is a regular on the Waldenbooks, Borders and Essence bestseller lists, regularly chosen by Black Expressions Book Club, and has been the recipient of numerous awards, including the Gold Pen Award, the Emma Award, Vivian Stephens Award for Excellence in Romance Writing, the Romantic Times Career Achievement Award and the Zora Neale Hurston Literary Award.
