Private law practice, Chicago, 1983—1986. Assistant state's attorney Cook County, 1986—1988. Member Illinois General Assembly from District 33, 1992—1996, United States Congress from 5th Illinois District, 1997—2003, member government reform and armed services committee.

Governor State of Illinois, Springfield, 2003—2009. Radio talk show host World's Largest Store -AM, since 2009. Arrested on federal corruption charges that include allegations of trying to sell or trade the Senate appointment to the highest bidder.

Denies any wrongdoing, has steadfastly refused to resign, 2008. Became the first governor in the history of the state of Illinois to be impeached, removed from office on January 29, 2009.
