Brought by parents to the United States, 1872. Preparatory education, Barton Academy, Mobile, Alabama. Student under Otto Grundeman, Robert Vonnoh, Frederick Crowninshield and Longfellow, Boston Museum Fine Arts, scholarship, 1884-1885.
Studied at Julian Academy and L’Ecole des Beaux Arts, Paris, under Lefebvre, Constant, Jean Paul Laurens in painting, Charles Chapu in sculpture.
Maintained studio at Mobile, 1885-1889 and since 1913. Engaged in painting tigers of India, 1893-1896, Afghans and Baluchis of northwest Indian frontier, 1898-1900. Official painter of state entry into Delhi (painting is 18 foot long, 11 foot high and contains 1000 figures), accession of Edward VII as emperor of India, 1902.
Commissioned to make model for restoration of Chitor elephants, Delhi Gate.
Painted series of 43 pastels of furnaces at Ensley Steel Works, Birmingham, Alabama. Made 8 murals and 4 panels in relief for rotunda and dome of Alabama State Capitol, 1926-1930.
Married Charlotte Elizabeth Barnes, 1891 (died 1920).
