(Long out of print, this highly praised classic study of w...)
Long out of print, this highly praised classic study of western mining is now available with three new chapters by Elliott West. When originally published in 1963, Professor Paul’s book offered the first comprehensive view of western mining as an integral part of the settlement process. In his supplemental chapters, Professor West presents a sweeping social history of mining camps—encompassing discussions of gender, class, race, labor, and the environment. The combined scholarship of Paul and West makes a strong case for the transforming effects of the mining frontier on western society in particular and American society in general. The American Historical Review praised the original edition as “a fresh, penetrating approach.” This revised, expanded edition continues to offer a distinctively vivid voice and an unusually keen eye for telling detail.

(The most comprehensive book ever published on the Califor...)
The most comprehensive book ever published on the California gold discovery, containing a detailed mass of accounts and sources relating to that momentous event, by one of the outstanding authorities in the field. All known accounts by the participants in the gold discovery are here, including variant accounts, by Marshall, Bigler, Brown, and Wimmer, plus the related testimony of Capt. Sutter. biographical and critical notes by Rodman Paul accompany each of the accounts. A wealth of related materials, some originating in the form of letters and memoirs -written in retrospect of the discovery -are next presented. Some of this important material has never before been published. And some letters originally published in newspapers in the 1850's -including _ at least one by Marshall-have not seen publication in modern times. This is followed by a section of suggestive analysis by Dr. Paul, and a section on the spread of the news and the results of the discovery for the discoverers, California, and the world. The whole, as organized by Dr. Paul, is constructed in such a way as to present an intriguing problem in historical evidence. The gold discovery itself is, of course, one of the great events in American history-but while it is one of the best known events, historians are not yet certain of precisely what happened. The central problem is not uncommon in American history: a great event witnessed only by meagerly educated men who left little written record that is strictly contemporary.
