Educated at Wenya Central School, Bulambya, then at schools in Chitimba and Livingstonia where he attained the Junior Certificate of Education in 1957. He went to the Teachers’ Training College at Domasi and qualified there in 1960.
While teaching he continued his studies privately, gaining his London Certificate of Education in 1964. He got a scholarship to England to study at Manchester University where he obtained a certificate for teachers of the deaf in 1964. The following year he went to London University where he was awarded a certificate for audiology technicians. In 1968 he attended seminars for teachers of the deaf in Denmark and Kenya.
His political career began when he won a seat in the National Assembly for Chitipa South on April 17, 1971. After making his mark on the back benches he was noticed by President Banda and catapulted into the cabinet on April 4, 1972.
A devout Roman Catholic with transparent honesty and no previous experience of Press, radio or public relations until government office was thrust upon him out of the blue. Having studied in England, Denmark and Kenya he is a man of compassion and awareness of social problems in the world with a sincere desire to do his best to project Malawi's achievements with honesty at home and abroad.
