Bergstedt was born on March 31, 1947 in Duluth, Minnesota, United States; the son of Roy Axel and Pearl Marie Bergstedt.
Bergstedt received a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Minnesota in Duluth in 1970. Three years later he was given a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Minnesota in St. Paul. Also in 1975, Roger earned his Master of Science degree from Iowa State University.
Bergstedt began his career as a fishery biologist at the United States Fish and Wildlife Service in Ann Arbor in 1976 and in Oswego in 1977.
Then in 1985, he took a position of a research fishery biologist at the USGS (United States Geological Survey) Hammond Bay Biological Station. In 2000, Roger was appointed a field station supervisor at the same station and held it for six years. Also he was a guest associate editor for Journal of Great Lakes Research in 2001-2003.
Bergstedt is a member of American Fisheries Society.
On February 7, 1970 Roger Bergstedt married Jocelyn Susan Jacobs. They have 2 children.
