(This is the most comprehensive book ever written on one o...)
This is the most comprehensive book ever written on one of the world's greatest, and most explosive, rock bands: The Who. Organized by year, Anyway Anyhow Anywhere presents in diary fashion exactly what The Who were doing, where they were doing it, and with whom from 1958-1978. This classic day-to-day chronicle of one of the world's greatest rock bands is now available in a smaller, more portable format. Exhaustive appendices detail concert tours, radio and television gigs, recording sessions, record releases, and solo activities.

(The frontman of one of the greatest bands of all time tel...)
The frontman of one of the greatest bands of all time tells the story of his rise from nothing to rock 'n' roll megastar, and his wild journey as the voice of The Who. The result is a remarkable memoir, instantly captivating, funny and frank, chock-full of well-earned wisdom and one-of-a-kind anecdotes from a raucous life that spans a tumultuous time of change in Britain and America. Born during the air bombing of London in 1944, Daltrey fought his way (literally) through school and poverty and began to assemble the band that would become The Who while working at a sheet metal factory in 1961. In Daltrey's voice, the familiar stories, how they got into smashing up their kit, the infighting, Keith Moon's antics, take on a new, intimate life. Also here is the creative journey through the unforgettable hits including My Generation, Substitute, Pinball Wizard, and the great albums, Who's Next, Tommy, and Quadrophenia. Amidst all the music and mayhem, the drugs, the premature deaths, the ruined hotel rooms, Roger is our perfect narrator, remaining sober (relatively) and observant and determined to make The Who bigger and bigger. Not only his personal story, but this is also the definitive biography of The Who.

(This classic rock opera is brought energetically to life ...)
This classic rock opera is brought energetically to life by an outstanding cast including many stars of the rock music industry. Told through the remarkable music of The Who, this is the story of Tommy, who, when just a boy of six, witnessed the murder of his father by his mother (Ann-Margret) and her lover (Oliver Reed). They command him, "You didn't hear it, you didn't see it, and you won't say anything to anyone…" As a result, the traumatized boy retreats into the shadows of his mind and becomes deaf, dumb, and blind. (Lisztomania, Ken Russell's follow-up to Tommy finds him e...)
Lisztomania, Ken Russell's follow-up to Tommy finds him even more in the mood for desultory spectacle than his garish pop artistry adapting the Who's rock opera. Seeking to tell the story of superstar composer Franz Liszt through a freewheeling series of pop allegories, kitsch, quotes, and pastiches, Russell hopes to reflect in contemporary terms the runaway train of Liszt's celebrity, love life, and alleged rivalry with Richard Wagner. Roger Daltrey, the Who vocalist, and star of Tommy returns to Russell's circus as Liszt, a great pianist nevertheless seduced by the ease with which he can make women squeal by playing flamboyant renditions of "Chopsticks." Floating on a sea of groupies, Liszt struggles with the possibilities of real love while also encountering the vampiric Wagner's exotic plans for world domination. Intuitive impressions, not history, are what this film experience is for.

Actor musician producer author songwriter
Daltrey, Roger was born on March 1, 1944, in Hammersmith Hospital, East Acton, West London, England. He is one of three children of Harry and Irene Daltrey. Daltrey's father fought in the Second World War.
Roger Daltrey attended Victoria Primary School and then studied at Acton County Grammar School in London with Pete Townshend and John Entwistle. In 1963 Daltrey was expelled from the school for tobacco smoking.
In 1957 Roger Daltrey made his first guitar from a block of wood and joined the band called the Detours. In the daytime, Roger worked in a sheet metal factory, in the night he played with his band. In 1961 while at Acton County Grammar School, he recruited John Entwistle and subsequently agreed to John's proposal that Pete Townshend should join the band. It was his energy and ambition that drove the group during their formative years. That same energy, coupled with his unwavering resolve, has sustained the group during periods of uncertainty ever since.
The Detours displayed an early genius by putting together unusual elements into a world-class performance. The unusual elements included Daltrey on vocals, John Entwistle on bass, and Pete Townshend on lead guitar. In 1965 they added drummer Keith Moon.
In 1964, they discovered another band with the same name the Detours and changed their name. Townshend suggested "The Hair" and Townshend's roommate Richard Barnes suggested "The Who." The next morning, Daltrey chose the second variant. The band was also named The High Numbers but was soon renamed back to The Who. They were first noted for deafening shows and for smashing their instruments in ferocious displays of auto-destructive art, but they went on to considerable chart success through original songs written by Townshend and the more humor-oriented Entwistle.
Roger's earliest tastes in music ran to the blues and R&B which formed the setlist during their early years as The Detours, as well as Fifties rock'n'roll, which is reflected in his outstanding interpretations of such noted Who covers as Eddie Cochran's "Summertime Blues" and Johnny Kidd & The Pirates' "Shakin' All Over." When Pete Townshend became the group's songwriter, Roger became the mouthpiece for his lyrics and ideas. At the same time, he contributed to the group's sense of showmanship by developing his unique skill at twirling his microphone lead around like a lasso and, by the time of Tommy in 1969, becoming one of rock's most iconic sex symbols with his golden curls, bare chest, and fringed suede jackets. Daltrey has written several songs for the Who including The Who's second single - "Anyway, Anyhow, Anywhere," 1965, "See My Way," 1966, "Early Morning Cold Taxi," 1968, "Here for More," 1970, "Crossroads Now," 1999, and "Certified Rose," 2001 but released only in As Long As I Have You (2018) album.
Roger has cultivated a singing career outside of The Who, beginning in 1973 when he found himself on the BBC's Top Of The Pops, the United Kingdom's then premier chart TV show, promoting the single 'Giving It All Away' which reached number five in the United Kingdom charts. It was a track from his first solo album Daltrey, released that same year, which he followed up with the albums that include Ride a Rock Horse, 1975, One of the Boys, 1977; McVicar 1980; Best Bits 1983, Parting Should Be Painless, 1984, Under a Raging Moon, 1985, Can't Wait to See the Movie, 1987, Rocks in the Head, 1992, and As Long as I Have You, 2018.
Roger also recorded several original soundtracks (some with The Who) for the movies: Lisztomania (1975), Tommy (1975), Quadrophenia, The Kids Are Alright (1979), McVicar (1980), Amazing Journey: The Story of The Who (2008). Daltrey established a stage film career after starring in the movie Tommy (1975). In many respects, the experience of singing the Tommy song-cycle enabled Roger to become Tommy Walker, the deaf dumb and blind boy of Pete's imagination, and it was therefore only natural that he should assume the role in Ken Russell's movie adaptation of the rock opera in 1975, for which he received a Golden Globe nomination. This in turn led Roger to develop a concurrent career as a film actor while continuing to sing with The Who. Other film credits over the years include Ken Russell's Lizstomania, the title role in McVicar, Lightning Jack with Paul Hogan, Teen Agent, and numerous roles in TV dramas. He appeared in the United States CBS TV show C.S.I. - which uses Who songs as its theme music - as five separate, differently made-up characters, one of them a middle-aged African-American woman. Other United States TV appearances include Lois & Clarke (Superman), Midnight Caller, William Tell, Sliders and Highlander as well as Leprechauns for Celtic Leprechaun Ltd and The Bill, the long-running United Kingdom TV police drama. He has also narrated a series for the History Channel, undergoing extreme hardships similar to those faced by pioneering settlers in America and elsewhere, and produced several films including Quadrophenia, McVicar, Buddy's Song, and a documentary Cancer Rebellion.
The Tommy era saw Roger mature enormously as a vocalist, and nowhere was this maturity more evident that on Who's Next, whether on the melodies of the beautiful "Behind Blue Eyes" and "The Song Is Over" or, at the other extreme, the torturous scream that climaxes "Won't Get Fooled Again." On Quadrophenia, Pete's second and more ambitious rock opera, Roger was able to bring all his newfound abilities to bear on rockers like "5.15" or power ballads such as "Love Reign O'er Me" which has since become a concert showcase for his outstanding vocals.
Roger has appeared on stage away from The Who on many occasions. To celebrate turning 50, Daltrey played two nights at Carnegie Hall in 1994 and the recordings were issued later that year as A Celebration: The Music of Pete Townshend and the Who, with a companion DVD surfacing in 1998. His 1994 solo concert at New York's Carnegie Hall, with The Juillard Orchestra, was the fastest-selling event in the venue's history. The following year he appeared on stage as the Tin Man in a production of The Wizard Of Oz at The Lincoln Centre, and in 1998 he starred as Scrooge in A Christmas Carol at Madison Square Garden. He has also performed with his friends The Chieftains, the traditional Irish band, and toured the world with the British Rock Symphony alongside artists Darlene Love and Zak Starkey interpreting a variety of rock classics.
Since 2000 he has been a patron of the Teenage Cancer Trust, a charity that builds specialized wards for teenagers with cancer in the United Kingdom. That year Roger had the idea of setting up the first show at the Royal Albert Hall by "The Who & Friends," with ticket sales and revenue from a DVD and CD raising over £1.2 million, and as a result, Roger was given a Humanitarian Award in 2003 from Time magazine. The Teenage Cancer Trust shows during March and April have now become an established and eagerly awaited annual event at the Albert Hall. In February 2005, Roger was awarded a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) by the Queen at Buckingham Palace for his services to music and good causes.
As a member of The Who, Daltrey was inducted in 2005 into the United Kingdom Music Hall of Fame. In December 2008, he and Pete Townshend were honored with America's most prestigious cultural awards as recipients of the 31st annual Kennedy Center Honors in Washington, District of Columbia by then-President of the United States, George W. Bush. This was one of many awards that were bestowed on Roger and Pete Townshend for their contributions to music, among them the James Joyce Award from the Literary and Historical Society of University College, Dublin (2009), the Steiger Award for excellence in music, Germany (2011) and the honorary degree from Middlesex University in recognition of his contributions to music (2012).
Ever pursuing his mission to give something back to teenagers, "without whom," as he said, "we would have no career." In November 2010, Roger, with Pete Townshend at his side, launched Teen Cancer America. A year later, on March 24, Roger and his band gave a complete performance of Tommy at a Teenage Cancer Trust show at the Royal Albert Hall, London, supported by imagery which he commissioned from students of Middlesex University. Over the next year, he toured Tommy in the United States, Europe, and Japan.
Between November 2012 and March 2013, The Who toured an arena production of Quadrophenia & More in the United States and the United Kingdom with added shows in Paris and Amsterdam. Roger directed the staging and visuals of the show himself, reassuming his long-standing responsibility for sequencing Who concerts and choosing which songs the group will play, a role he continued to play during The Who Hits 50! Tour of 2015-16.
In November 2013, a mere six months after his friend and former Dr. Feelgood guitarist Wilko Johnson was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, Daltrey accompanied him on sessions for an album entitled Going Back Home, which, to everyone's delight and surprise notched up a number 2 in the United Kingdom charts. Featuring reinterpretations of material from throughout Wilko Johnson's career, the record was launched with a gig at the Shepherd's Bush Empire in February 2014. Daltrey continued his charity efforts by recording a cover of Townshend's "Let My Love Open the Door," of which all sales proceeds benefited Teen Cancer America.
In 2017 and 2018 he continued his solo touring in the United States with members of The Who touring band including Simon Townshend. The summer of 2018 saw Roger, the band, plus a 45-piece orchestra perform The Who's Tommy to sell-out audiences across the States whilst at the same time releasing his first solo album in 26 years, As Long As I Have You featured Townshend on guitar, Mick Talbot on keys, and Sean Genockey on guitar. In addition to new songs, the set also included covers of songs by Nick Cave, Stevie Wonder, Stephen Stills, and more.
In the summer of 2018, Roger toured the United States with members of The Who band (Simon Townshend, Frank Simes, Loren Gold, Jon Button, and Scott Devours) performing The Who's Tommy accompanied by some of the leading symphony orchestras in the United States including the Boston Pops, the Detroit Symphony Orchestra and the Chicago Philharmonic, each conducted by Keith Levenson. In October 2018 Roger's long-awaited autobiography Thanks A Lot Mr. Kibblewhite was published to great acclaim by Blink Publishing, the United Kingdom, and Henry Holt, the United States.

2002Roger Daltry was a supporter of the British Labour Party but finally left the Party and in an interview with The Telegraph, he said of his dislike for Labour: "It pains me to say it, but in my life, a Labour government comes in with incredible optimism and leaves the country in the s**t." Roger has criticized Labour and explained his reasons for being pro-Brexit in a new interview, following controversial remarks where he branded Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn a "communist" and disparaged the #MeToo movement.
The Who's Roger Daltrey told about the impact of Brexit as the United Kingdom triggers Article 50 - saying that it is "the right thing for the country to do." He has been very outspoken about his opinion on Brexit, going on record last year to slam the "corruption" of the European Union and said: "I am not anti-European, but I an anti the present way we are being governed in Europe."
Daltrey told NME: "We are getting out, and when the dust settles I think that it'll be seen that it's the right thing for this country to have done, that's for sure. It's got nothing to do with any of the immigration issues or any of that for me. It was to do with much more. The majority of this country felt that their voices weren't being heard. It would have been nice to do a deal with Europe but they didn't want to do a deal, and they sent Cameron back with a bag. I'm sad we voted how we voted, but I think we have to go with it now. This country will always be alright, I don't worry about it. You know it's going to be bumpy on the way - we expected that. The ones that voted to get out. But Iceland had it a bit bumpy when they went bankrupt, but oh not now."
He reiterated his comments on Brexit and Europe: "I'm not anti-Europe, I'm anti-Brussels, but people don't get the distinction. That's why I'm so angry about it. I want someone at least answerable to me that I can say: "F**k off, you're useless!"
In 1970, Daltrey said: "I come from a working-class background and I am proud of it and I intend to fight for the workers' right to know. We all need to know what goes on behind the scenes, that's causing this country's economic mess. When we have a Freedom of Information Act in this country we shall have restored our Right to Know the Truth and that will bring sanity to our tax laws." He supported The National Campaign for Freedom of Information.
When asked his opinion on Donald Trump, Daltrey told NME: "His f*****g haircut! He needs it cut and as my mother would say, wash your f*****g mouth out." He went on: "On other pieces of politics, let's put it this way: when you say that middle America and the Democrats lost it, but Trump didn't really win it - because Democrats threw it away by putting Hilary Clinton up. A dead dog would have won it against her, look at that."
Daltrey has long owned a farm that operates using traditional methods and equipment. Two employees do most of the work, but Daltrey pitches in when he's around. He also designed and created Lakedown Trout Fishery, a 26-acre site open to the public that features four spring-fed lakes. It is vital, in his own words to preserve the heritage of the way England was.
In 1976 The Who established The Double O Charity to help Erin Pizzey fund her Chiswick Women's Refuges. It then became the first concert fundraiser for Nordoff-Robbins. From 1989 onwards the funds dispersed by Double O increased considerably because The Who reconvened for an anniversary tour, generating several million dollars for children's charities throughout the United Kingdom and the United States in 1989 alone. The Double O Charity has a history of working both with individuals and large treatment programs via a team of sponsored and volunteer qualified helpers.
The Charity runs now under Townshend's initiative as a private dispersal charity focussed more than ever on "survival" from drug and alcohol damage, domestic violence, sexual abuse, music education, emergency relief for International disasters, and young people's prison reform. It has dispersed over £4,000,000 since inception from Townshend and Who-related activities.
Roger Daltrey has been a longstanding patron of the Teenage Cancer Trust and Teen Cancer America for many years and, with Pete Townshend at his side giving his full support, has helped raise millions of pounds for the charity.
Their long-range goal to establish Teen Cancer America programs in strategic locations across the United States. The Trust has built a number of cancer treatment centers in the United Kingdom hospitals. In November of 2011, Roger Daltrey, Pete Townshend, Robert Plant, and Dave Grohl opened the first United States unit at the Ronald Reagan UCLA (The University of California, Los Angeles) Medical Center in Los Angeles.
Roger made a detour between The Who's New York and Atlanta shows to open the latest Teen Cancer America facility at Bon Secours St Francis Hospital in Greenville, South Carolina. Daltrey unveiled a guitar he had signed with Pete which is now on display there. Roger spent some private time with a group of young patients, engaging and encouraging them before stepping up to speak on behalf of The Who's charity to an appreciative audience. Quotations:
"The disease should be a mere comma in the lives of teenagers, not a devastating full stop. It's a big ambition, but we can get there by working together."
"I don't have any illusions anymore. The illusion that rock 'n' roll could change anything - I don't believe that. I've changed. Who would have ever thought that I'd end up saying that I want to be an all-around entertainer? But that's what I want to be."
"You know, I was a school rebel. Whatever they said do, I didn't do. I was totally anti-everything. I was a right bastard, a right hard nut. I just totally closed the doors to ever wanting to know what they had to teach me. Rock & Roll was the only thing I wanted to get into."
"Of course, chicks keep popping up. When you're in a hotel, a pretty young lady makes life bearable."
"I'm a rock god?! I'm five foot seven. I had my jaw broken, and so my chin stuck way out. That's how I became tough - I learned to pick up anything and fight back ... A rock god!"
"I'm a very strict taskmaster when it comes to lyrics because I have sung the best in Rock 'n' Roll."
"My ambition totally in life is to write a hit song for the Who."
"I have no regrets at all. I think I've made the most of what small talent I have. I've been incredibly lucky. Looking back, I've won the lottery every day of my life."
"When I go fishing, I come away feeling like I’ve smoked half a dozen joints."

Quotes from others about the person
"I think Townshend's voice as a writer would never have been heard without Roger's interpretation. I don't think Pete has that sensibility of carrying off those characters he creates. I think Pete understands that because in his solo stuff he never gets to that "self" that is so clear when he's writing for Roger. It only jells when he knows that voice is coming out of Roger's mouth." - Chris Stamp.
Roger Daltrey was married twice. On January 29, 1964, he married Jacqueline Rickman but divorced in 1968. On July 19, 1971, Roger married Heather Taylor.
