Roger Federer is a Swiss tennis player, who dominated the sport in the early 21st century with his exceptional all-around game. His total of 20 career men's singles Grand Slam titles is the most for male player in the history of the game. Federer has been the longest chart-topper of the Association of Tennis Professionals rankings, holding the position for total of 310 weeks (including 237 straight weeks).
Background
Ethnicity:
Federer's father is Swiss, and the tennis player's mother is of a South-African origin.
Roger Federer was born on August 8, 1981 in Basel, Switzerland. He is a son of Robert Federer and Lynette Federer, both pharmaceutical company employees. Federer has an older sister Diana.
Education
Roger Federer grew up not far from Birsfelden, Riehen, and then in the suburban Basel town of Münchenstein. He revealed his passion for sport at an early age. As he once stated, badminton and basketball helped him to hone his hand-eye coordination. As to tennis, he began playing it when he was eight. In youth, Federer supported FC Basel and the Swiss national football team and had Boris Becker as one of his favorite athletes.
Federer's parents encouraged their son in his interest in tennis, and soon he took his hobby to another level. He became Switzerland's junior champion when he was 14. In 1998 he captured the Wimbledon junior singles title, earned the Orange Bowl junior tournament crown in Miami, and made the finals at the U.S. Open and semifinals at the Australian Open. Federer finished the season as the number one in the world on a junior level.
It's also worth mentioning, that, on November 24, 2017, the athlete received an honorary doctorate from the University of Basel.
The start of Roger Federer's career can be counted from 1999 when he left junior level and turned professional. That year, he debuted on the Swiss Davis Cup team and became the youngest tennis player (18 years and 4 months old) to end the season in the world's top 100, finishing at number 64. The next year, the young player competed at the Olympics in Sydney, reaching the bronze medal match. In 2001, Federer made the quarterfinals at Wimbledon defeating Pete Sampras and finished 2002 as six in the world. The feat was followed by his first Grand Slam tournament title, at Wimbledon, and his first Australian Open and his first U.S. Open titles in two subsequent years.
A gifted shotmaker, Roger Federer triumphed in 11 of the 17 tournaments he played in 2004 and again finished the year ranked number one in the world. Federer almost retraced his numbers the next year as he won 11 of 15 tournaments, including Wimbledon and the U.S. Open. From July 2003 to November 2005 he also won a modern-record 24 finals in a row.
Federer continued to defend his status as the best tennis player. In 2006, he added victories at Wimbledon, the Australian Open and the U.S. Open to his credit and became the first player to win the latter two events during three consecutive years. In the final of Roland-Garros (the French Open) of that same year, Federer was beaten by Rafael Nadal of Spain. In total, Federer grabbed 12 titles in 17 tournaments of that year and made the finals in all but one tournament.
The 2007 Australian Open provided Federer with the 10th Grand Slam title. The year was marked by the rivalry with Nadal which started when the latter deprived Federer of the French Open title. The victory over Nadal at Wimbledon made Federer only the second male player (after Björn Borg) in more than a century to earn five straight Wimbledon titles. Federer then won his fourth consecutive U.S. Open, again a men's record in the open era.
In 2008 Federer's record 65-match grass-court winning series was interrupted when he lost to Nadal in the Wimbledon final. Federer later paired with his compatriot Stanislas Wawrinka and won the men's doubles gold medal at the Beijing Olympics. In August of that same year, Federer ceded his number one world ranking to Nadal, finishing his record run of 237 straight weeks on top of the rankings. The following month Federer won the U.S. Open.
In June 2009, Federer earned his 14th Grand Slam title, his first French Open in combination, giving him a championship in each of the four Grand Slam tournaments over the course of his career. The following month at Wimbledon, Federer won over Andy Roddick of the United States to grab his sixth Wimbledon championship and his record 15th career Grand Slam title. He soon recaptured the world number one ranking.
In January 2010 he won the Australian Open, defeating Andy Murray of Great Britain. Federer again defeated Murray in 2012 to win his record-tying seventh career Wimbledon title. A month later the two athletes fought for the gold medal match at the London Olympic Games. This time, however, Federer was beaten by Murray and had to make do with a silver medal.
Although the 2013 season abounded in injuries, and Roger Federer won only one Grand Slam final. However, the tennis player managed to lead Switzerland to its first-ever Davis Cup victory. In 2015 he appeared in the Wimbledon and U.S. Open finals but lost to Djokovic both times. Soon after the loss in the Wimbledon semifinals in July of the next year, he went off for the remainder of that season because of a steady knee injury.
Federer resumed competing in the Grand Slam tournament of 2017 at the Australian Open. The 17th-ranked men's player, he won the singles title in an epic five-set final against Nadal. Federer won his eighth Wimbledon title that same year, followed by his sixth career Australian Open singles title in 2018. That season, as Federer confessed closer to its end, was complicated by a hand injury that badly affected his forehand.
The next year began with a loss to Stefanos Tsitsipas of Greece in the fourth round of the Australian Open. After the match, Federer made his decision to compete on the clay court public, for the first time in three years. Federer later took revenge on Tsitsipas, defeating him at the Dubai Tennis Championships final. It was his 100th career singles title. The debut of that year on clay court, in the Madrid Open, was marked by a 1200th career victory but ended up with the loss to Dominic Thiem of Austria in the quarterfinals. Federer then tried his hand at another clay-court tournament, the Italian Open. He left the event before the quarterfinal match because of a right leg injury.
Roger Federer made the semifinals of the French Open, winning over his compatriot Stan Wawrinka in the quarterfinals. Federer's long-time rival, Rafael Nadal, beat him in the semifinals. Federer won Nadal back at the semifinals of the Wimbledon championships. He didn't manage to defend his next Wimbledon title losing to Novak Djokovic in the final match that lasted four hours and fifty-seven minutes, the longest in the history of the championship. Federer then defeated Matteo Berrettini and Djokovic in the round-robin of the ATP Finals. In the semifinal, he was beaten by Stefanos Tsitsipas in straight sets.
After losing to Novac Djokovic in the semifinal match of the 2020 Australian Open, Federer was obliged to skip the Dubai Championship, the Indian Wells Masters, the Miami Open and the French Open to treat his knee injury. Early in the summer, the athlete announced that he withdrew from the season, promising to resume competing in 2021.
A holder of an incredible number of records, Roger Federer is considered as one of the greatest tennis players of all time. The record holder for most Grand Slam men's singles Championships with 20 titles in 30 finals, including the 8 record victories at Wimbledon and tie for the most US Open titles with Jimmy Connors and Pete Sampras at five, Federer is one of eight men to win all four majors.
Federer is the second player in the Open Era with more than 1,080 singles wins and the third men player, after Jimmy Connors and Ivan Lendl, with more than 1,000 victories. Federer is the second only for Career Singles Titles to Jimmy Connors having 103 to his credit. Federer won 65 consecutive matches on grass between June 2003 and July 2008. He has a 52-18 record in Davis Cup, with a 40-8 record in singles play.
The tennis star of Switzerland is the oldest male player, at 36 years old, to become world No. 1. He also tied with Jimmy Connors for the 2nd most years at No. 1. The list is definitely far from complete and may be easily expanded by Federer's future triumphs, as he is yet to retire from professional tennis to date.
Roger Federer has been assigned the International Tennis Writers Ambassador (ITWA) for Tennis three times and Ambassador of United Nations' Year of Sport and Physical Education once, in 2005. A three-time BBC Sports Overseas Personality of the Year and four-time World Sportsman of the Year, he is a recipient of many prestigious awards, including the ATP World Tour Award, the Arthur Ashe Humanitarian of the Year Award, and the Stefan Edberg Sportsmanship Award, among others.
Federer was ranked No. 2 on the Reputation Institute's 2011 study of the World's most respected personalities, just behind Nelson Mandela but ahead of Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, Oprah Winfrey and Bono.
Federer has been honored by many top media worldwide during his career, like L'Equipe, Hello and Magazines, and La Gazzetta dello Sport to name but a few. The athlete has been chosen as the world's most marketable sports star by the London School of Marketing in 2015 and as the Most Marketable Sports Person in 2016. With a brand value of $37 million a year, he was named the top global athlete brand in Forbes Fab 40 that same year making him the world's most valuable sports brand.
Religion
A Roman Catholic, Roger Federer has once stated that he prefers to keep his religious views private. He was never seen praying before or after matches and getting down on his knees in thanks after a victory.
Politics
Roger Federer isn't involved in any political activities or campaigns.
Views
Federer established the Roger Federer Foundation in 2003, the aim of which is to support educational, sports, and leisure opportunities for children in places of the world where there is little funding for that. The organization has invested over $28.5 million in educational programs in Africa and Switzerland, reaching out to 650,000 children.
The athlete collaborates regularly with the Humpty Dumpty Foundation, an Australian organization that raises money for children's hospitals, and UNICEF. Besides, he is actively involved in a countless number of other events and projects.
Quotations:
"When you do something best in life, you don't really want to give that up – and for me it's tennis."
"To handle that stardom, the red carpets, the photo shoots, people all of a sudden recognizing you and following you in everyday life, it's a bit weird. It's strange, and it can have funny effects on you in terms of do you like it or don't you like it. Some people run away from it, some people embrace it; I found a good middle ground."
"What I think I've been able to do well over the years is play with pain, play with problems, play in all sorts of conditions."
"I am a sucker for those old traditional places, and Rome is as good as it gets, particularly when you throw in Italian food."
"We can't always agree on everything."
"Before, I guess, mum and dad were everything, but now, in my case, I had two new girls and all of a sudden they're completely dependent on you and there's a third generation. It's a funny shift all of a sudden. You have the babies, you have yourself and then you have your parents."
"I've done so many interviews over the years in so many different languages. Radios. Papers. Magazines. There's always another interview to do. It's quite something, I have to say."
"I feel a bit awkward playing in a red shirt out at Wimbledon. But I don't dislike it."
"The serve, I think, is the most difficult, you know, in terms of coordination, because you got the two arms going, and you got to toss it up at the right time so."
"For me, it's important that a fan can buy something that is related to me. Like in soccer, you buy a shirt and it's got somebody's name on the back. That's kind of a cool thing."
Personality
Having Swiss German as his mother tongue, Roger Federer became fluent in German, French and English as he spent most of his early life near the French and German border. The athlete also speaks functional Italian and Swedish.
Federer once stated that his favorite colors were blue, white, and red, and his favorite animals were a lion and a tiger. The athlete has also confessed that he prefers roses and orchids to any other flowers.

"This is a guy who buys drinks for photographers and thanks reporters who show up for his press conferences." – Rene Stauffer, Swiss sportswriter
