Gadsby was born on February 3, 1950 in Coventry, United Kingdom; the son of Frank William Gadsby and Nellie Irene (Faulconbridge) Gadsby.
Gadsby received a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Birmingham in 1971. Three years later he earned his Bachelor of Medicine degree and Bachelor of Surgery degree from the same university.
Gadsby set up a practice diabetes clinic in 1984 and has been speaking and writing about diabetes ever since. Since 1992 he has been a senior clinical lecturer at the Warwick Medical School. Also since 2007 Roger has served as an associate clinical professor at the same school. There he has run short courses on primary care topics, developed the Certificate in Primary Diabetes Care and other diabetes courses, and taught on the Primary Care Management programme. Roger is a chairman of the trustees for Pregnancy Sickness Support.

2005Gadsby was a founding member of the Primary Care Diabetes Society in the United Kingdom and was its treasurer from 2005 to 2008. He is a member of the Royal College of General Practitioners, British Medical Association and British Diabetic Association.
In October 1974, Roger Gatsby married Pamela Joy Gadsby. They have two children.
