The current worldwide high level of interest in the health effects of toxic chemicals on the environment is reflected in this work. The general principles common to all chemicals acting on the body are introduced. Case studies focus on the interface between science and policy, and the complex interrelationships among ecological systems. The historical and existing framework for the regulation of toxic chemicals in food, drugs and the environment is presented.
