Is it appropriate to mix humor and the Holy Bible? Yes, if you do it with love. This book does not make fun of the Bible; it has fun with the Bible. After all, it was God who started things off by giving us all a sense of humor, so he must have wanted us to use it. When Jesus told the fellow to take the log out of his eye before complaining about the speck in the eye of someone else, he was using humor to make a point. A lot of humor is based on misunderstanding. Like the student who wrote, “Samson slew the Finklesteins with the ax of the apostles.” That’s funny and it is in no way disrespectful to the Sacred text. Nor is the famous slip of the tongue by the minister who meant to say “John baptized Jesus in the Jordan,” but instead proclaimed, “Jordan baptized Jesus in the John.” Nor was the little boy who asked, “Dad, was it Paul who wrote the letter to the Galoshes?” So relax, read, and make some joyful noise.
