Rokube I Shimizu was born in Settsu Province, Osaka Prefecture in 1738.
Rokube I Shimizu became a disciple of Seibe Ebiya, a potter in Kyoto, and built a kiln at Gojozaka in Kyoto where he made tea ceremony pottery.
Rokube I Shimizu was granted by the Imperial Court a seal representing the name of Dainichi for his black tea-cups. Keishu Zenji, priest of the Tenryuji Temple gave him a hexagonal, seal of the Chinese character sei or kiyo. It is said his seal Kiyomizu was given him by his master, Seibe.
He was a friend of Okyo Maruyama and Goshun Matsumura, famous painters.
