Background
Rokuro Umewaka was born on August 3, 1907 in Tokyo, Japan. He was the eldest son of Minoru Umewaka of the old Kanze family. His grandfather was also named Minoru Umewaka and was one of the three best Noh players in the Meiji Era.

Rokuro Umewaka withdrew from the Kanze school in connection with the dispute over the issuing of license and established the Umewaka school. Returned to the Kanze school after reconciliation (1954).
