Born in Miskolc, Kökény won four medals at the International Coach Federation Canoe Sprint World Championships with two golds (K-2 1000 m: 2005, K-4 1000 m: 2006) and two silvers (K-4 1000 m: 2001, 2003). Kökény also competed in three Summer Olympics, at the London Olympics of 2012, he won the gold medal together with Rudolf Dombi for his country in the Kayak Double (K2) 1000m.
