Sim attended the Balestier Hill Technical School (now Beatty Secondary School).
He was given an honorary Doctor of Philosophy degree in Business Administration from Wisconsin International University in 2000 and a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Marketing Management from the American University of Hawaii in 2002.
Sim began his career in 1980, when he founded R. Sim Trading, a private company that retailed general household products in Singapore and served as manager of the company for three years.
In 1983, Ron founded OSIM International Ltd. and worked as chairman and chief executive officer. In 1986, he led OSIM International Ltd.’s regional expansion into Hong Kong and into Taiwan the following year. Then Sim held the position of a chairman of Brookstone Inc. until February 2009 and has been its director since October 2005.
He has been vice-chairman and non-independent non-executive director at Perennial Real Estate Holdings Limited since October 27, 2014. Also Sim has worked as a director at Jumbo Group Limited since May 12, 2017.
Sim is a founder of OSIM International Ltd. and in 2003 he set up a scholarship fund for international management at PSB Academy, a private educational institution in Singapore. The company has also supported the Children's Cancer Foundation and is a Title Sponsor of the Badminton World Federation (BWF), currently known as OSIM BWF Word Super Series.
In 2013, he was listed as twenty-first on Forbes' "Singapore's 50 Richest" list. Sim has created V3 Group, which has brands such as Osim, TWG Tea and GNC across more than 20 countries.
Sim served as a board member of International Enterprise Singapore from 2006 to 2008, Sentosa Development Corporation from 2004 to 2009, a member of Investment approval Committee of Spring Seeds, an initiative of Spring Singapore in 2005-2007, a board member of the committee of Economic Review Sub-committee in 2001 and the Board of Trustees, Tan Tock Seng Hospital Community Charity Fund from April 2012 to February 2014.
