Berry, who served in the British Merchant Navy and Army during World War II, also worked as a miner, fitter, football player, boxer, and carpenter. Writing was his main pursuit as he crafted poems, essays, short stories, and novels. His first novel was "Hunters and Hunted", which was set in the fictional mining village of Blaenddu in Wales.
Despite the fact that five of his books were published in London by such reputable firms as Hutchinson, W.H. Allen and Macmillan, Ron Berry was neglected by metropolitan critics and, in Wales, it was only on the appearance of his last novel that he attracted much attention. During his career, Berry also covered soccer for The Observer in London. His stories were featured in periodicals including New Welsh Review and Planet. His last book, "This Bygone", was published in 1996.
Ronald married Rene Jones, with whom he had two sons, three daughters.
