Career
He is noted for being the first prisoner of war to be listed at the Nagasaki National Peace Memorial Hall for the Atomic Bomb Victims and the second non-Japanese (the first being a Chinese civilian). He was captured when his plane was shot down by Japanese forces near Java, and was then sent to a prisoner-of-war camp in Nagasaki, where, on 9 August 1945, he was killed when an atomic bomb was dropped on the city.
