He started his activity in 1961 in the Netherlands at Leiden University where in 1964 he got Doctor of Math and Physics. In 1964-1973 Venetian lectured maths at the Teacher Training Institute and at the same time headed mathematics department at the Teacher Retraining Institute. In 1969 he became the principal at the school in Suriname.
In 1973 Venetian was appointed the Education Secretary. However in 1980 he left this position to lecture again. It happened after the coup d'état. The coup was directed by a group of officers headed by lieutenant colonel Dési Bouterse. He ruled the country until 1987 and had almost unlimited power.
He started his political career in 1987 when elected the Creole Suriname's National Party leader.
It may safely be said that everything in the president’s life is cyclical: he was the Education Secretary twice (again in 1988) and was elected president twice too.
In September 2004 the country entered The Organization of American States and Runaldo Venetian pointed: “Today the Republic of Surinam is a democratic country again, where the human rights are respected, all the institutions function efficiently, where free general fair elections are held regularly. And having such an atmosphere of democratic values, strong religious and ethnic tolerance, economic potential my government, people and I build the society to prosper and participate in its own and international processes”.
As Runaldo is a democracy supporter, he began with the restoration of the economy. Strict programs to stabilize the economy and heavy taxes were not approved by people. However it resulted in the economic expansion. The relations with the Netherlands were improved to increase the financial aid to Suriname.
