Rajah received a Bachelor of Science degree and a Master of Science degree in Zoology from the University of Madras in 1973. Nine years later he earned his Master of Philosophy degree in Endocrinology from the same university. In 1993, Roopmathy was given a Master of Science degree in Reproductive Biology from the University of Maryland. Also in 1994, he received a Ph.D. from that university.
Rajah began his career as a junior lecturer of the zoology department at St. Theresa's College in 1973. Four years later he took a position of an assistant professor at the same college, where he worked until 1987. Also Roopmathy served as an honorary lecturer of the zoology department at Holy Cross College from 1981 to 1982.
In 1988, he was appointed a laboratory assistant of the anatomy department at the University of Maryland, where he served until 1991. In addition, since 1994, Rajah has been a research associate at Sinai Hospital.
Rajah is a member of the Society for Study of Reproduction, Chesapeake Society for Electron Microscopy, Society of Reproductive Biology and Comparative Endocrinology and American Society for Cell Biology.
