Roy Alexander Barry was born on September 19, 1942, in Edinburgh, Scotland. He began playing in Edinburgh-area junior football with Musselburgh Athletic before being noticed by Heart of Midlothian. His early career developed within Scotland's postwar football culture, in which junior clubs served as an important route into professional football.
Barry began his senior career with Heart of Midlothian, commonly known as Hearts, an Edinburgh club founded in 1874 and one of Scotland's established professional teams. He played for Hearts from 1961 to 1966 and was part of a side that won the Scottish League Cup in 1962–1963. His performances also brought experience of European club competition.
In 1966 he joined Dunfermline Athletic for a reported transfer fee of £13,000. Dunfermline, founded in 1885, was one of Scotland's prominent provincial clubs during the 1960s. Barry became captain and helped the club defeat Hearts 3–1 in the 1968 Scottish Cup Final. Dunfermline also progressed to the semifinals of the 1968–1969 European Cup Winners' Cup, a competition for domestic cup winners.
Barry transferred to Coventry City in 1969 for a reported £40,000. Coventry had established itself in England's top division during the 1960s, and Barry played for the club from 1969 to 1973. He then moved to Crystal Palace for a reported £45,000 and remained there until 1975. Palace, based at Selhurst Park in south London, were competing in the English First Division during this period.
Returning to Scotland, Barry joined Hibernian in 1975. Hibernian, an Edinburgh club founded in 1875, was one of the country's historic top-flight teams. He moved to East Fife in 1976, combining playing duties with management until 1978. East Fife, based in Methil, had won major Scottish honours earlier in the twentieth century and continued to compete in the Scottish professional leagues.
Barry subsequently played for Nuneaton Borough in 1978–1979. In February 1982 he served as caretaker manager of Oxford United for six matches. Oxford United, founded in 1893, was then competing in the English Football League and later entered one of the most successful periods in its history under Jim Smith.
Barry has been described in club histories as a tough-tackling, no-nonsense defender. His playing reputation was associated with physical commitment and determined defensive work.
