Career

Began as foreign correspondent Associated Press, Europe, assigned to cover League of Nations, 1934. Later staff correspondent Christian Science Monitor, working foreign news desk (Boston), writing front page column The World’s Day, also conducting daily newscast. Assigned by Monitor to West Coast News Bureau, covering Australia, New Zealand, Hawaii, Alaska, 11 western states.

Joined staff North American Newspaper Alliance, 1940, sent Alaska first Clipper flight, June, 1940, to New Zealand and Australia first Pan American Clipper flight, August 1940.

Remained on assignment in East Asia, Australia, Netherlands East Indies, Singapore, Malaya, free and occupied China and Philippine Islands. Broadcast from Australia for M.B.S., 1941, later from Chunking, China.

Became Collier’s correspondent, in Far East prior war with Japan. Caught last Clipper from Hongkong to Manila, arriving just before Philippines attacked, December 7, 1941.

Covered Philippines campaign for M.B.S., Collier’s, North American Newspaper Alliance.

Captured by Japanese Army in Manila, January 2, 1942, repatriated to the United States aboard Master of Science Gripsholm, December 1943. Correspondent for M.B.S. and Collier’s covering Philippine liberation campaign, 1944-1945. Now M.B.S. news analyst.

Received 1942 National Headliner’s Journalism award for radio reporting under combat conditions.

United Nations Association, award for “unceasing effort and contribution to cause of international cooperation,” January 1944. Citation from Alaska for remaining in Manila to report the invasion.
