Minister of State, Home Office, 1983-1984. Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, 1984-1985. Secretary ofState for the Home Office, 1985-1989.

Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, since 1989. Her Majesty Diplomatic Service, Peking, the United Nations and Rome, 1952-1966.
