Carnall was appointed Bergassessor (junior mining official) to Upper Silesia, where he lectured on mining science at the Bergschule at Tarnowitz. From 1839 to 1844 he was the head of the Upper Silesian Mining School in Tarnowskie Góry. In 1844 he was transferred to work in the Higher Mining Office in Bonn with the title of assessor. In 1845 he went to Bonn as Oberbergrat, and soon afterward returned to Berlin, where with Leopold von Buch and Gustav Rose, he initiated the Deutsche Geologische Gesellschaft. While working in Bonn he was appointed a senior mining councilor (Oberbergrat), and in 1847 - a secret mining counselor (Geheimer Bergrat). As an administrative officer of the mining department he was in charge of the Prussian Knappschaftsordnung, which regulations still govern much of the German mining industry. He simultaneously lectured at the University of Berlin until 1855.
In 1854 he became a Referent in the Prussian ministry of commerce and in 1855 was promoted to Berghauptmann. His scientific work was diverse. He founded the official German mining journal, which (until 1945) published important papers on administrative, technical, mining, and geological problems. He was one of the founders and long-time president founded in the 1848 year the German Geological Society (Deutsche Geologische Geselschaft. In the years 1853-1858 was also the editor of the journal Zeitschrift für Berg-, Hütten- und Salinenwesen im preussischen Staate. He is also the author of many technical drawings, designs and geological maps.
Carnall died on November 17, 1874, in Breslau, Germany (now Wroclaw, Poland).
