Rudolf Hartmann was born on January 19, 1937.
As a child, Rudolf Hartmann started to play piano and violin. He also studied at the University of Music and Performing Arts Munich.
After graduation, Rudolf Hartmann started to perform bass character roles at Augsburg opera and after two years he started to perform baritone character roles at the opera in Nuremberg. In 1972, Hartmann started to work at Zürich Opera House. He was a member of the ensemble until his retirement in 2002. His most notable role was the role of Jakob Lenz in the Swiss premiere of Wolfgang Rihm's chamber opera Jakob Lenz. His last appearance on the stage was in 2005 as Zuniga in Bizet's Carmen. Hartmann also worked as a lecturer at Zurich University of the Arts from 1978 to 2002. In 1981, he published Richard Strauss: The Staging of His Operas and Ballets.
