Rudolf Schweitzer-Cumpana was born on May 7, 1886 in Pitesti, Romania. He was the son of Ludwig Schweitzer.
Rudolf finished high school in his native town before attending the Prussian Academy of Arts (present-day Academy of Arts) in Berlin from 1904 to 1909, where he studied under Erich Hancke, Arthur Kampf and Anton von Werner.
In 1911, Rudolf held his first exhibition at the Official Salon, followed by the "Tinerimea Artistica" Society in 1912 and the Romanian Athenaeum in 1920.
In 1929, the painter embarked on a work trip to Constantinople, Athens and Thessaloniki. Between 1931 and 1932, he travelled to Paris, where he had an exhibition at the "Jeanne Castel" Gallery.
In 1939, Schweitzer-Cumpana travelled and worked assiduously in Italy (Venice, Milan, Florence, Rome, Naples, San Remo), as well as in Germany (Munich and Augsburg).
Later, in 1951, he was appointed a professor at the Fine Arts Institute "Nicolae Grigorescu" (present-day Bucharest National University of Arts). Six years later, in 1957, Rudolf undertook a research trip to Yugoslavia.
During his lifetime, the painter held numerous solo exhibitions.
