Rune Hassner studied photography with Rolf Winquist at Studio Uggla in Stockholm (1946-1949).
A freelance photographer, film maker and writer, Rune Hassner was visiting professor in 1973 at the School of Mass Communications of the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis. He has also lectured in photohistory at the universities of Stockholm, Uppsala, Lund and Gothenburg since 1972.
For television he made the eleven-part series Bilder for miljoner on photohistory (1969-1970, Stockholm), and an English version, Images for Millions, produced for the University of Minnesota in 1973. Rune Hassner also made the series China Towards the Year 2000 and The Image as a Weapon, both with Jan Myrdal in 1978. In addition, he has made two feature films for Swedish TV, Myglaren in 1966 and Hjalparen in 1968.

1987Rune Hassner belongs to Svenska Fotografemas Forbund (since 1966) and Fotografiska Muséets Vanner (since 1969), serving as the latter's chairman in 1973-1975 and as a board member from 1972 to 1975. He has also been chairman of Tio Fotografer (1970, 1975), which he has belonged to since 1958.
