He is currently an assistant coach with the NAIT men"s ice hockey team Hewson was selected by the Winnipeg Jets in the 11th round (285th overall) of the 1993 National Hockey League Entry Draft. Hewson played four seasons (1992 to 1996) of major junior hockey in the Western Hockey League (WHL), with the Swift Current Broncos and Regina Pats, before enrolling at the University of Alberta.
Professionally, Hewson playied five games in the American Hockey League with the Philadelphia Phantoms during the 2000-2001 season, and 72 games with the Louisiana IceGators of the East Coast Hockey League during the 2001-2002 season.
Following his brief professional career, Hewson served two seasons as an assistant coach with the Alberta Golden Bears. He also became an officer with the Edmonton Police Service.
On July 26, 2010, Hewson was announced as an assistant coach with the NAIT Ooks men"s ice hockey team
He skated five years with the Alberta Golden Bears men"s ice hockey team, where he led the Canada West conference in scoring for three consecutive seasons, while leading his team to win national Championships in both 1998-1999 and 1999–2000. He was three times warded the Andy Purcell Hockey Trophy as Golden Bears Hockey most valuable player.At the national level he is the only person to have twice won the Senator Joseph A. Sullivan Trophy as the top player in Canadian Interuniversity Sport, being named Player of the Year for both 1999–2000 and 2000-2001.
