(With its picturesque background and unusual, exciting twi...)
With its picturesque background and unusual, exciting twists, this fast-action novel is the most interesting of the famous Clint Lane stories. From start to finish it is a story of dramatic contrasts, of sudden and violent action, erupting to jar the long, silent vigil of the watches on the Communist front, of intrigue and treachery, menacing the peaceful lives of families and villages. Clint Lane does get a limited chance to play once more in a great football game and in an even more dramatic baseball game, but mostly his is the hard life of the soldier, manning the Korean ramparts.

Russell Potter Reeder, Jr. was born on March 4, 1902 in Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, United States. He was the son of Russell Potter Reeder Sr., an Army officer, and Narcissa Pillow (Martin) Whitehouse.
Russell Reeder entered the United States Military Academy at West Point on July 1, 1920. He was the first in his class to receive six demerits because he had not straightened up his room fast enough. However, he soon turned things around and became a champion athlete for the school in sports, such as baseball, football and swimming. Russell was commissioned a Second Lieutenant of Infantry on June 12, 1926.
After graduation from West Point in 1926, Reeder was commissioned a Second Lieutenant of Infantry. From 1929 to 1937, he was an assistant football coach at the school, then served as the army director of athletics in the Canal Zone from 1939 to 1941. General George C. Marshall sent him to the Pacific to learn and report what American troops had learned from fighting the Japanese. Marshall added a foreword to Reeder's written report and requested one million copies, which were then given to troops in training.
In 1944, Reeder was sent to England to command the Twelfth Infantry Regiment of the Fourth Infantry Division. His troops participated in the D-Day Invasion and landed on Utah Beach. Reeder was wounded in action and was later evacuated. Eventually, doctors had to amputate his leg. He returned to West Point, when General Maxwell D. Taylor asked him to establish a course in leadership for students at the academy in 1946.
Reeder had left active military service in 1946 and worked at West Point as an assistant athletic director from 1947 to 1967. Encouraged by the success he enjoyed in writing the report for General Marshall, Reeder began to write various books-biographies, histories, works of historical fiction and others about or based on his alma mater. Among his books are West Point Plebe, West Point Yearling, The West Point Story (co-written with his sister, Nardi Reeder Campion), The Story of the Civil War, The Story of World War I, The Northern Generals, Dwight D. Eisenhower, Omar N. Bradley and Heroes and Leaders of West Point. His autobiography, Born at Reveille, was named after the family legend, that he was brought into the world as reveille sounded. His work, The Mackenzie Raiders, was adapted as a television series, while his Bring up the Brass was filmed as The Long Gray Line.
