He was signed to SBK Records In 1991, and a self-titled album, produced by Philosophy Ramone (Billy Joel, Paul McCartney, Paul Simon), followed later that year. The album debuted on the Billboard Heatseekers chart, and the single, "My Heart Belongs to You", hit Number. 28 on the Billboard Hot 100. and the song "I Need You Now" hit Number.

Irwin toured with his own band, opening for Roxette in 1992, and went on to play with Mayfield featuring Curt Smith, lead singer of Tears for Fears, later in the 1990s. He later went on to tour with Aerosmith (1997–2014), Sting, (2000-2001) and Bryan Adams (2002) as a keyboardist, background vocalist and guitarist.
He has also performed live with Jeff Beck, John Fogerty, Cheap Trick, jonny Language, Slash, Duncan Sheik, Jessica Simpson as well as many other well known acts. Irwin has also written songs for Aerosmith, Foreigner, Scorpions, and Meat Loaf: Bat out of Hell 3 which debuted at #8 on the top 200 billboard album charts.
In 2006 Irwin produced Clay Aiken"s single "I Want to Know What Love Is" on the hit record A Thousand Different Ways which debuted on Billboards top 200 albums charts at #2. In 2008, Irwin performed in the band for the Chris Botti Live in Boston Digital Video Disc, performing with Sting, Steven Tyler and the Boston Pops Orchestra. In 2012, Irwin released his self-produced, second solo album Get Maine Home, which includes guest artists Steven Tyler and Brad Whitford of Aerosmith, Chris Botti and Dean DeLeo of Stone Temple Pilots.
The song "Manhattan" premiered on the Bravo"s The Real Housewives of New York in which he appeared several times.
Most recently Irwin co-wrote the Aerosmith Adult top 40 hit "What Could Have Been Love" (#21), on their album Music From Another Dimension and the top 10 hit "Lollipop" for Japanese artist Lisa Hirako.
