Ruth Evelyn Slacer Muck was an American educator and professor of elementary student teaching. She taught in a one-room school, directed an experimental nongraded primary program, earned an Ed.D., led professional organizations, and served the United Methodist community before retiring in 1976.
Background
Ruth Evelyn Slacer was born on July 17, 1910, and married Gordon Muck. Her professional life was centered in western New York, where she combined elementary teaching, teacher education, educational research, and extensive community service. She remained associated with educational and United Methodist organizations after her university career and died on March 17, 2006.
Education
Muck earned a Bachelor of Science in Education and a Master of Science in Supervision from State University College at Buffalo. In 1966 she earned a doctoral degree from the University at Buffalo. Her graduate education accompanied a career that moved from elementary teaching into teacher education, supervision, experimental school organization, and research on graded and nongraded classroom arrangements.
Career
Muck began her career as a public-school teacher in 1931 and taught until 1942 in the one-room Pomeroy School in the town of Lockport, New York, where she taught all eight grades. In 1942 she joined the primary area of the Campus School at State University College at Buffalo. There she directed an experimental nongraded program for several years, developing a sustained professional interest in elementary classroom organization and pupil achievement. She later became a professor of elementary student teaching at State University College at Buffalo, where she prepared prospective teachers and continued her work in elementary education. Her doctoral research, completed at the University at Buffalo in 1966, examined the effect of classroom organization on academic achievement in graded and nongraded classes. She retired in 1976. Alongside her academic work, she served as a consultant for teacher-education workshops in Minnesota, directed youth education for a United Methodist church, presided over the Town of Lockport New York History Society, directed a children's used-clothing shop, and held leadership and board positions in United Methodist organizations.
