(The First Stage Reader begins with "The Alphabet Story," ...)
The First Stage Reader begins with "The Alphabet Story," an imaginative tale that illustrates the phonetic generalizations and emphasizes the predictable interactions between vowels and consonants. Students then begin to study the long and short vowel sounds within the context of phrases, stories, and mnemonic devices such as song and play. By page 10 in the Reader, beginners can read phrases and sentences. Once the students have completed the program they will be able to choose reading materials of their own interests and at their individual levels of maturity. By the end of the program, after approximately 50 instructional hours, students can read independently, with full comprehension!
