McFaul attended New York University"s Tisch School of the Arts, where he studied Film and Television Production and graduated in 1996 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree.

Early years
McFaul began creating short films while growing up in suburban Maine. McFaul began his career as a commercial editor, and in 2003 transitioned into directing. He has directed commercial spots for the Coca-Cola Company, Sony, and numerous Broadway musicals.
He directed the complete first season of Adult Swim"s Fat Guy Stuck in Internet.
He directed 23 episodes of the new The Electric Company revival for 2009 from Sesame Workshop, and 10 episodes of the Adult Swim"s 2011 NTSF:South Dakota:SUV::.
