Achievements include the creation of two animal models of chronic intestinal inflammation with extraintestinal inflammation, demonstrated differential genetic susceptibility in inbred rat rats to chronic intestinal and systemic inflammation, demonstrated ability of sterile bacterial cell wall components to induce chronic, spontaneously relapsing inflammation, demonstrated the ability of normal intestinal bacteria to induce and perpetuate chronic intestinal inflammation.
