A graduate from the Literary Department, Waseda University, he studied Sanscrit at the Central University, Benares, India.

Became a priest of the Daijoji Temple in Tajima Province in 1885. He travelled in Nepal together with Junjiro Takakusu and Ekai Kawaguchi (1912), returning to Japan the following year. Appointed professor at the Koyasan College, a Buddhist institution of the Shingon Sect, and became chief priest of the Daijoji Temple.
