Background
Chemist. Doctor of Science. Born in Shiga Prefecture. Graduated from Kyoto University where he studied organic chemistry. Joined the Suzuki Shoten (trading company) in Kobe and became instructor at his alma mater (1921). Subsequently became an assistant professor and professor and left Japan (1925) for study in the United States and Europe. Received his doctorate (1926). He was awarded a prize of the: Japan Chemical Society for his research in monosaccharides. Is director of the Organic Synthetic Chemistry Research Institute attached to Kyoto University.
